How to move out of your property hassle-free

It’s often been said that one of the most stressful things you can do is move house. Whilst being an exciting and rewarding time with the prospect of moving into somewhere new, whether it be your first home to rent, buy or whether you’re moving into something bigger to start a family; there’s quite a bit of organisation and planning involved. Deadlines, inventory checks and moving furniture can be enough to send even the most efficient of home-movers into a slight panic. So how can you avoid the aggro to make your move as stress-free as possible?

It might not sound easy initially, but trust us, with the right tools (and mind-frame) it can be done. Moving house can actually be quite fun if you put your mind to it. It’s simple; be efficient, be quick and most of all…be prepared!

1)      Multi-task like a pro

If you’ve never really multi-tasked before then now is the time to learn. Of course it’s important not to go too overboard – juggling too many things at once can lead to things going wrong, and you don’t want a disaster on your hands. Just remember to be resourceful; if you’re packing up boxes, why not also get your energy company on speakerphone to cancel your contract, or if you’re checking your inventory in a rented property, clean as you go along whilst also ticking items off your list.  The more you can balance, the better.

2)      Check, check and double check

Make lists for everything. Seriously. There will be a lot going on all at once and it can be easy to get overwhelmed with everything that needs to be done, particularly if you are an owner-occupier as you can’t afford to be forgetful. It might be an idea to keep a diary or make notes of important dates such as when furniture is getting picked up, when to pick up keys, when to cancel your gas and electric and so on. And of course, always have one final look round before you close the door for good, you wouldn’t want to leave your favourite jumper behind!

3)      Keep on top of finances

Whether you’re a tenant or a home mover, finances play a huge part in property. For renters, there will be letting fees, deposits and other costs to consider. Remember that when you move out of a property, protection schemes can take a few weeks to process and return your deposit back to you; this might mean you paying the deposit on your new property before you’ve got your old deposit back – just something to think about. Hopefully you’ll have allowed yourself plenty of time to save up for the new deposit so you can bank as much as you can. For those buying a property, the more deposit you save, the lower your mortgage repayments will be, so it really is win-win.

4)      Don’t sweat the small stuff

Dithering over the smallest of decisions is a no-go. Not only do you not have time for it but in the grand scheme of things it probably won’t even matter. Wondering if you should hang on to that cutlery set you’ve had since your student days? Or are you too scared to tell your parents you broke that telly they said you could borrow ‘until you got yourself a new one’? It’s easy to make ourselves worry over the small details to avoid the fact you have a big task in hand, but procrastinating never really solved anything so be prepared to make quick decisions and accept all the help you can get.

5)      Remember to enjoy yourself…!

This is a big moment in your life, do you really want to look back and remember how stressed out you were because a glass got smashed in transit or you accidentally left a pair of old shoes in the loft? Embrace embarking on a new chapter in your life and make the most of it. Plus moving house is always a great excuse for a bottle of bubbly and a takeaway so you’ve always got that to look forward to.
